My name is Emma Winterson and I am Deputy Head Girl for Houses!
My job is to ensure that the House System in the school is appropriately competitive, fun and enjoyable to take part in! The five Houses; Bronte, Curie, Nightingale, Pankhurst and Teresa all compete against each other through varied events to win House Points which are totaled at the end of the year in the hope of receiving the ever-envied House Cup.
The three main House events throughout the year are as follows:
House Dance (Autumn term): all year groups show off their moves and style either as a group or as solo acts. Even the teachers willingly express their talents onstage, fighting for the prestigious status of winning Staff Dance. The 2011 winners were Nightingale, with Bronte winning Staff Dance with a unique Britney Spears routine!
House Music (Spring term): all year groups rest their voices and practice religiously in advance for this lively festival of musical talent! The performances are solo acts or put-together bands, singing to win points for their team. The 2012 winners were Pankhurst.
Sports Day (Summer term): the girls and staff take to the field to partake in a number of sporting events in the hope of winning points for their Houses. 2012 showed off a popular Olympic theme as nominated members of each house led their House onto the field with Olympic torches (inflatable unfortunately) ready to observe the afternoon finals! This year we were lucky enough to have Miss Styles (nominated Torch Runner of the London Olympics 2012) run along the 100m with Mr Cooksey with her real Torch! The winners of Sports Day 2012 were Bronte!
Alongside these three main events, the Houses compete in the Interhouse Games allowing the girls to play various sports within their year once a term.
Each House also sponsors a charity who they raise money for throughout the year in various ways, such as cake sales or the popular ‘Pankake Sale’ on pancake day that Pankhurst introduced. Staff Dance raised £289.19 for the House charities last October.
