The Pupil Premium is additional government funding to improve education outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in schools in England.
Pupil Premium is for students who at any point in the past 6 years have: been in receipt of Free School Meals (FSM); or who have been continuously looked after for the past six months; or who have been adopted from care under the Adoption and Children Act 2002 or who have left care under a Special Guardianship or Residence Order.
In addition the Department for Education (DfE) introduced the Service pupil premium (SPP) in April 2011 in recognition of the specific challenges children from service families face and as part of the commitment to delivering the armed forces covenant.
Schools have the freedom to spend the Premium in a way that they think will best support the raising of attainment for students attracting Pupil Premium funding. How the Pupil Premium funding is spent is monitored closely and schools are accountable for demonstrating the impact of the funding that they have been allocated.
