Instrumental Appeal

In January last year, the Music Department put out an appeal for the donation of unwanted instruments to be passed on to eager recipients at the Kronendal Music Academy in South Africa. We have been delighted this week to receive a photograph of the instru-ments being enjoyed and wanted to share it with you.

Kronendal Music Academy provides music education to underprivileged township children in Cape Town, providing cultural stimulation and creating a platform for racial and social interaction and integration.

They remain in need of some instruments and are more than willing to make repairs, no matter how extensive! If you think you might have an instrument to offer, no matter its condition, please bring it to the Music Office; all donations will be gratefully received. Many thanks. The BBC Micro:bit is here!

You may have seen the advertising on the BBC about a new venture to encourage our students to get involved in coding. At last we have received our batch of micro:bits and we will be issuing these to all Year 7 students next week during their Computer Science lesson. We will start them off with a couple of tutorials and exercises but after that it will be up to girls’ imagination how far they want to take it. During the summer term there will be a coding club for Year 7 run by the Year 12 Computer Scientists which anybody can come along to – show us what you have done or ask questions on what other projects we can devise. One word of warning – parents may be tempted to have a play too but only with the permission of your daughters! Please look out for the Intouch being sent from the office shortly.

Courtyard Café taking shape

Our new Courtyard Café furniture arrived with the good weather this week. Shipped in from Belgium, the circular tables and integrated bench-es mirror the design in the courtyard’s new block paving and are very stylish. The sleek galvanised steel and wooden finish reflects the design contributions from our students and the architectural expertise of parent, Dina Lockwood. Even the wooden litter bins are elegant – certainly more classy than our usual bright blue plastic ones! Parasols, planters and vegetation will be arriving over the next couple of weeks. Thank you so much to all parents, staff and students who have contributed to this project through Shop for Challoner’s, the Foundation and the PA, including the Christmas Fayre team who provided the initial momentum. Farewell to Mrs Fowles

As the summer draws ever closer, we bid a fond farewell to Mrs Fowles as she prepares to retire from her teaching career and set sail (quite literally!) for sunnier climes. Mrs Fowles has taught Maths for 12 years at DCHS, punctuated by a brief sabbatical at Beaconsfied High School. During her time here, she has inspired students with her creative lessons, her love of Mathematics and her wholehearted positivity. She is a wonderful, dedicated teacher and a beloved colleague and friend. Her energy lights up a classroom and she is always willing to go the extra mile for her students; no question is ever too big or too small. We will miss her boundless enthusiasm and sparkling wit. We wish her the very best for her retirement and for life beyond DCHS. Bon voyage Mrs Fowles!
