Lecture Series

Welcoming in Occupational Psychologist Kim Birnie to this week's Lecture Series was a true privilege for Sixth Form. Now running her own company providing executive coaching for businesses, Ms Birnie began with a degree in English and Psychology at Birmingham. Being able to combine a love of working with people in a scientific setting led Ms Birnie into teaching, HR and ultimately occupational development- her pas-sion. Ms Birnie uses an extensive knowledge of Psychology to work with senior staff in companies - helping them improve their performance in the company as part of the team. She stressed the importance of mindfulness and being aware of your own behaviour in order to work well with others. Self awareness and intrapersonal skills are essential towards having a strong EQ (Emotional Intelligence); high EQ being a measure that is now be-lieved to hold more key to success than IQ. Ms Birnie showed us various psychological models that she uses to develop and progress with the peo-ple she coaches and a genuine care for her clients was evident. Answering questions from the sixth form, Ms Birnie also explained how she deals with people who we perceive to be difficult and further how to recognise our 'personality blind spot'. Many students appeared inspired by Ms Birnie's career choice and there were a lot of questions following the talk. One student commented 'I was fascinated, inspired to do my own psycho-metric testing and introduce it to my friends. I learnt it's really important to be aware of our own personality as well as how we are perceived by others'.

Next week's speaker will be Pam Mason who works in Marketing.

Young Enterprise

The Young Enterprise team Populo is made up of both DCHS and DCGS students in year 12. Since our business plan came 2nd place out of all the Chiltern YE teams, we have now developed a 'car driver's pack' designed to make even the simplest of journeys easier and more efficient. With products such as a USB port, you can now charge your phone on the go and avoid that 5p charge with our foldable 'bag for life'! Individually the products would amount to a minimum of £20, but we're offering each pack at £14. If you are interested in a pack, please visit them at the Milton Keynes fair this Sunday, or email the team at [email protected] to pick up an order form
