Netball

Year 8 netball v Godstowe. Three teams played against Godstowe School just before half term. It was excellent match practice for the girls and although all three teams lost, they played with real focus throughout the game and were always determined to play to the final whistle.

A lost 12 - 25; B lost 3 - 28; C lost 1 - 25

Lunchtime Recital at Amersham Free Church

It was lovely to be back at Amersham Free Church before half term for our first lunchtime recital of 2016. Today’s concert was packed with variety, from a Bach Prelude played by Ariana Bird (Year 9) and folk fiddle traditional played by Hana Chenne-our (Year 8) to French impressionism from flautist Hazel Minty (Year 10) and jazz standard Fly Me to the Moon performed by Rachel Warren (Year 9) on tenor saxophone. We were also treated to two fine ensemble performances – a lyrical vocal duet and Romantic piano duet – from Year 11 girls Harriet Powell, Cailin Dunsmuir and Joey Wong respectively. Many congratulations to all our performers. We look forward to our next lunchtime recital shortly after half term on Tuesday 1st March.

Are you interested in performing at one of these recitals? If so, please speak to Miss Korzinek or Mrs Wood and we’ll gladly slot you into the pro-gramme!

School Forum

Every week the Common Room during Period F on Tuesdays sees sixth-formers come together to discuss social, political and economic issues. This week’s Forum had a spectacular turnout, with year 12’s and 13’s sitting (and standing!) in every possible place to listen and share their views on the EU referendum. In my introduction I covered the main points of immigration, the costs of EU membership and trade before Prabhleen Chhabra contrib-uted a point on employment from her EPQ. As usual, there were thought-provoking statements from the audience including; how would leaving the EU affect our influence in the world? Would leaving be detrimental to our security in this current situation? At the moment we have a say in the rules that we must follow but wouldn’t leaving change this? I also welcomed three year 12’s upfront this week; Kizzy Mussenden, Johanna Madslien and Fatimah Nazir will be carrying on ‘The Forum’ legacy once the Year 13’s have left. They made good contributions to the discussion which I am sure will be carried on into the future. Deepa Mathew , Forum Lead

English Language Conference

On Friday 12th February Y12 and Y13 English Language students attended a Conference at the University of London. There was a lecture from Professor Deborah Cameron concerning language and gender and Professor David Crystal spoke about the many stories of English as a global language. Another Professor shared current linguistic research into attitudes towards accents and explored research methods, some-thing very valuable for A Level coursework.
