Rowing

The Year 8 and Year 9 rowing team represented the school at the District rowing festival in Denham last week. Although there were no individual winners, Katie Burton managed second place as did Esther Coomber, each with very good times. Great success came in both relay events when both teams powered through to win decisively.

Café Scientifique

On Thursday 3rd March, we were fortunate enough to host Professor Ben. J Green, Professor of Pure Mathematics at Oxford University at our Café Scientifique. Professor Green spoke on the topic of prime numbers and elaborated on various hypotheses surrounding prime numbers and whether or not it is possible for them to be proved by mathematicians. He really engaged the students and definitely stretched our mathematical thinking skills! Thank you to everyone who attended and we look forward to seeing you at more Café Sci sessions in the future!

Hockey

It was a promising end to the season at the U13 district tournament at Marlow Sports Club. The team had a great start, beating Chesham Grammar 3-0 ,showing strength in attack and confidence in defence. Unfortunately, the team lost their remaining pool game to Wycombe High even though we scored goals and continued to show some good periods of play, putting the defence under pressure. The win against Chesham Grammar took the team to the semi-final against Beaconsfield High School. A great start to the match saw us go 1-0 up follow-ing a great team goal but the lead was short lived when unfortunately we were defeated 3-1 and did not make the final. A lot of positives to take away and lots to work on for next season. Well done to; Lucy Adams (GK), Freya Guneratne, Izzy Ashby, Ella Stubbs, Sasha Lomax (Captain), Lily Fernandez, Tamsin Scott, Olivia Cameron, Izzy Sellers and Imogen Hunt-Cook.

Under 13 District Hockey Tournament held at Marlow Sports Club.

The girls played 4 matches in their competition:

v William Borlaise won 3-1; v Beaconsfield High lost 0-2; v Aylesbury High lost 1-2; v Wycombe High lost 1-2

The team played really well, they were enthusiastic and motivated, we unfortunately lost the last game but came a creditable 3rd place overall. Well played to all the girls; Holly Adams, Jess Dardis, Sophie Nash, Isabella Jackson, Ellani Visavadia, Ananya Krishnashwamy, Susanna Catling, Simi Brar and Sara Ladha.

Netball

On Wednesday 2nd March the U15 Netball Team went to Kingsmead Netball Centre for our District Netball Tournament. We swept through the first few matches against some local schools in our group, with others remaining tighter and only winning by 1 goal over the 8 minutes halves. Fortunately, we came top of the group and proceeded onto the semi finals. We were against Chesham Grammar A, this proved to be our toughest match yet, but we managed to pull back from three goals down at half time to win by a couple. In the final we played Beaconsfield High School and lost 12-4, placing 2nd at the end of the day after a good last game. Everyone played well, and it was a great end to the season to say the least. Well done girls! Alex Telford

Calling all Carnegie readers

Unbelievably it will soon be time for us to launch this year's Carnegie Shadowing Reading group. As old hands will know a group of us spend happy hours reading the 6 or so books which have been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal before we all meet for a grand book club style discussion in the library on the afternoon the winner is revealed. We discuss, argue and vote on our winner and are then usually outraged by the book that actually wins. All this heated debate is assisted by biscuits, cake and soft drinks. Do keep your eyes peeled for the list that will be appearing in the library for you to sign up - year 7, do ask Mrs White in the library, or myself if you are interested. All you need is a desire to read! It is without doubt the highlight of my school year and I can't wait to share it with you. Mrs Meredith

Lecture Series

This week's lecture series welcomed in our very own Chair of Governors, Pip Wood, to discuss her career in corporate PR. A woman with a busy and active life in all respects, Ms Wood spoke of the exciting nature of her profession and the cool head needed when it comes to stick-ing up for a company's values in a crisis. She described also the diversity in communication based job opportunities, from financial PR to product placement to consumer based PR. Describing working for Sainsbury's and currently the property company Britishland, Ms Wood described multiple scenarios where PR helps enhance as well as maintain the reputation of a company. The excitement and passion for PR was clear- Ms Wood de-scribed never knowing quite what challenges she will face on a daily basis. The sixth form were also inspired to see a woman who can maintain both a successful working and family life- proving it is possible in today's working climate.
